Volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of those struggling with hunger. Volunteers help us provide food more efficiently and effectively to those in need. In 2012, volunteers provided nearly 30,000 hours of service at The Food Bank @ St. Mary’s.
We welcome volunteers as individuals or as part of a group. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, or accompanied by an adult if younger than 16 years. We accept court-ordered community service volunteers for limited hours during the week. All volunteers 18 and older are required to pass a background check.
We are always looking for weekly volunteers as well as those who can just come in occasionally.
Common Volunteer Positions:
Home Delivery Drivers
Our Home Delivery Program runs on Wednesdays. We deliver to people who are homebound and unable to visit our food bank due to age, illness, or disability. Deliveries happen any time between 9:30am-4pm on Wednesdays.
Warehouse helpers are scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays between 8am-3pm and help with various projects, such as cleaning, food sorting, and other projects such as making bags for our Home Delivery or Non Cook Programs. Volunteers must be able to commit to at least 2 hour shifts at least once a week, and should be able to walk and stand for at least an hour at a time. The ability to lift at least 30 pounds is a plus, but is not required.
Walk-In Program Sorters and Distributors
Walk-In Program volunteers are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Most volunteers come in from 9:30-1:30 or 11am-2:30, though other schedules are available. Volunteers inspect and organize food donations, distribute the food to customers, and perform other tasks as needed. Volunteers must be able to stand for at least an hour at a time. Ability to lift at least 30 pounds is desired, but is not required. Volunteers must be able to work with a diverse population and should be comfortable in a loud, fast-paced, and sometimes crowded environments. Saturday is currently full, but we do have space on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
7am Pick Up Drivers
7am Pick Up Drivers help us rescue groceries. This position involves picking up donations at a Queen Anne location, then driving to a Capitol Hill location, and then dropping off donations at our food bank in the Central District. Most drivers are done by 7:30am; the position is ideal for those who want to volunteer but have busy schedules (some volunteers do this on their way to work). The position is very easy but is a vital part of our operations. Must have a good driving record. Drivers use their own vehicles for this early pick up. We currently need a Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday driver.
8am-12pm Pick Up Drivers, subs and regular drivers
We do several pick ups throughout the day to rescue groceries from nearby stores (from 8am-noon). Training involves riding with a staff member or volunteer. Must have a good driving record and should be comfortable driving a van for some of these pick ups. We need drivers on Tuesdays (8am-10am) and Thursdays (8am-noon).
